The Next Right Thing

If you’ve seen Frozen 2 you know all about doing the Next Right Thing. But when you’re up against yourself and feeling stuck you can often feel like you don’t know what to do. What is the next right thing?

For some, like Anna in Frozen 2, who are deep in grief, any next thing may seem impossible because it seems impossible to really do anything. Time is slow and movements are sluggish, as you just go through the motions, When my father died I didn’t even know what to do. I knew I had to keep going, but it was not easy. So, I did what I had to do every day, taking care of my family, but giving myself even more grace than usual to be less than perfect.

For some, the next right thing to do could be something others might find comically easy but a grieving person finds difficult – and that’s ok. The people who aren’t you don’t know exactly what you’re going through. If getting into the shower is a struggle, focus on getting out of bed. Be kind to yourself. And recognize that you’re grieving. If your grief feels overwhelming, think about reaching out to a grief counselor or therapist.
